COMMUNITY IMPACT CENTRE CLOSURE, MEDICINE HAT

Last Updated September 10, 2025
  • Overview of Changes

    • The Municipal Planning Commission has approved a 180-day operation permit extension of the ghost kitchen at 503A Allowance.
    • Medicine Hat Emergency Shelter at 737 8 St SE remains open
    • We’re grateful for the community’s support and remain committed to serving Medicine Hat
    • If you have questions or would like a local representative to visit your business, organization, school, or church for a presentation or to share information about the community we serve, please call 1.833.448.4673
  • Impact on Those We Serve

    • Meal Services: The Community Impact Centre (CIC) provided over 100 meals per day, which will no longer be accessible at that location.
    • Mail Services:

      • 275 individuals relied on CIC mailboxes for government assistance, legal documents, and employment communications.
      • Additionally, over 100 individuals use the Allowance Avenue address on their government-issued IDs.
      • We are actively seeking alternative solutions to ensure a smooth transition.
    • Health & Wellness Services: 150 individuals per month will likely experience a disruption in the care we provide through the health & wellness program.
    • Donation Distribution:

      • We distribute approximately 350 essential clothing and hygiene items to 90 unique individuals in need from this location per month.
      • We are currently assessing our options of how to best distribute these donations following closure on February 28 with minimal disruption to our guests.
  • Changes to Food Services

    • Following the Municipal Planning Commission meeting held on August 20, 2025, a 180-day operation permit extension was approved for the operation of the ghost kitchen at 503A Allowance Avenue.
    • This also ensures continued food support to the shelter without increasing traffic to the 8th Street shelter. However, it will not make up for the 100+ meals that we served to those in need in addition to the shelter guests.
    • Only staff and volunteers will be allowed at the Allowance Avenue location during the 90 day period. Guests will be redirected to other community support where possible.
  • Changes to Shelter

    • Services from 503A Allowance Avenue will NOT be transferred to the 8th Street shelter to prevent increased traffic and operational strain at that location.
    • Shelter guests will receive all their meals on-site at the 8th Street Shelter location.
    • Select programs and services will continue to be available to up to 30 guests at the 8th Street Shelter.
  • Changes to Health & Wellness Services

As we transition to a new service model, we want to update you on how to access wellness support in Medicine Hat. While we are no longer operating from Allowance Ave, we remain committed to providing the same trusted services — now delivered out in the community.

    • All other volunteer opportunities will be paused during this transition period.
    • Wellness volunteer roles, including Footcare and Tax Clinics, will resume once a new location is secured.
    • New volunteer opportunities will be shared with the public as they become available.
